a few things

1) I can feel Jones kick! I felt him kick for the first time at 20 weeks. ( I am now 23) Trey has even been able to feel him. He is a very wild boy already. He kicks all the time. At one point last night on the couch, sophie was cuddled up behind me kicking me in my back and Jones was kickign me in the stomach. My kids are turning on me. Gotta love it.

2) I did not send out Christmas cards. Sorry. I am telling people I am going the green route by sending Christmas wishes via the internet. Truth be told: I am holding out for some really cute birth anouncements in a few months. Next year's Christmas cards will be adorable, I am sure. I love getting Christmas cards, though. I feel guilty with each one I open that I did not send them out. Oh well. Call me cheap. Call me lazy. They just didn't happen this year. Ba hum bug.

3) Being a housewife is great. Minus the fact that there is no pay and I go days only seeing Trey, Sophie and the people in the park/grocery store. The house is clean. And that is worth it.

4) I am heading to Starkville Christmas day for a long vaca. ( I know what you are thinking: vaca from what? You don't work. Well, shut up) I am staying until the 2nd. and I. Can't. Wait.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I am here, computer in hand.

I have been lacking a computer for a couple of weeks. Paying for Internet and not having a laptop is no fun at all. Plus, I really felt out of the loop. You miss a lot when you can't blog and facebook stalk.

I know it looks like I have been here for a while, but confession: Laura has written the last two posts for me. I was talking to a friend the other night and she said that pregnancy has changed my writing style on my blog. What are you saying? My sister has better grammar, knows how to spell and is a bit more sincere in her writing? anyway, thanks yaya for sharing the news of our baby boy.

My days are different now as I have started a new role as a housewife. It is not near as glamorous or dramatic as those on Wisteria Lane, but dinner is cooked every night nonetheless. I will start substitute teaching in January. That should be very interesting. I am sure blog stories will follow. Especially since apparently I look like I am in high school. I was at the post office the other day when I was told to skip in line in front of this older man because he was "sure I was needing to get back to class". When I looked at him confused he accused me of playing hooky from high school. Awesome. I look like a knocked up tenth grader.

Life is still grand. I feel fantastic (sans the heartburn that just started up a couple of days ago. Nothing a glass of milk can't cure, so no complaints) and just growing bigger everyday. I am breaking down and buying maternity clothes tomorrow. My mother-in-law and I are going shopping. I have exhausted the three outfits that fit comfortably.

I am having a time finding boy bedding I love, though. Designing custom bedding is overwhelming to me and I am not loving the bedding that I am finding. I called Pottery Barn Kids and they told me a new collection of nursery bedding is coming out in January. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, website suggestions/ stores for nursery bedding would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of pics from Henry and Colton's (his BFF) TRAIN PARTY last weekend. It was precious and we had so much fun! And, yes, I rode the train.

I can't believe they are three. Stop growing so fast, Henry Thomas. the mama and the aunts
Look at that precious, excited face.

The mamas with the two birthday boys

The train. It took everyone around the neighborhood several times. so cute

Henry turned 3 and can now say Trey and not Frey. Yes, we were kinda sad. But then again, this means truck is no longer **ck. So it's a win/win situation.

cute cake (and mighty tasty too)

Birthday boys!

And GOOD NEWS!! Kristen passed her final Step test I blogged about weeks ago. We all knew she would, but it is still such a huge weight off of her shoulders - off all of our shoulders.
Now on to Starkville to practice OBGYN. Go Dr. Fyke, Go!

December 4, 2009

and he shall be called...

Jones Edward Skaggs
(We will call him "Jones")
Jones is Trey's parents' last name. Trey's dad came into their family when Trey was very young and has been Trey's hero ever since. We wanted to honor him by naming our son after him.
This will be the 5th generation of Edwards in my family, starting with my late Dada's dad, John Edward; my Dada, Thomas Edward; my uncle, Bobby Edward; and my cousin, Jake Edward.
We're excited about both of the family names we have chosen.
Now...let the monogramming begin!!!!!!
P.S...If you are monogramming his initials, please put "S" in the middle, so that it will not look like "JES"... that is not the nickname I'm going for (and yes, I'm a psycho).

December 2, 2009

change of plans...

So...Trey and I went to the doctor this morning and SURPRISE! It had a wee wee!!
We're having a BOY!
The baby looks very healthy but I'm not as far along as we all thought. Instead of being 20 weeks, I'm only 18 weeks, which makes us realize that trying to sneak a peak a few weeks ago was entirely too early.
Bottom line--the baby looks healthy, I feel great, and we are excited!
Thanks for your prayers!
P.S... I've already ordered a few dresses, so don't look at baby boy Skaggs too strangely when you see him wearing pink smocks and bloomers.

Birthday boy!

I have not had internet for a few days. I am sure I have been missed.

Two important happenings since I last posted:

1) Today is little Henry's 3rd birthday! I can't believe he is three. I feel like a maw-maw when I say this, but they grow up so fast! We are going saturday for his train birthday party. I can't wait.

2) Thanksgiving was fabulous. We were able to see tons of family and eat tons of food. But possibly the more important thing: We won the Egg Bowl. From Dixon with Love!!

I go tomorrow to the doctor to find out for sure that this little one inside of me is a girl. Hopefully the baby will be a lilttle more cooperative than she was last time. An hour later we think it's a girl. Ha. I will let you know!

Happy Tuesday!

give thanks

I have so many reasons to be so thankful this season. It's been a year full of changes, but none of which I would take back. I am so thankful for each opportunity that God has given us and look forward to seeing what next year brings, especially meeting this precious baby!

I hope everyone takes time to count their blessings this year. I know I am.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

buttoned pants no more

Well, I think I wore my regular jeans tonight for the last time during this pregnancy.

I wore them to dinner.
I unbuttoned them during the meal.

I think the hardest part, for me, is knowing the numbers on the scale should go up every time I step on. I know it's supposed to, but still it sorta-kinda-in-a-small way bothers me.

That is so vain, I know. And I kinda feel bad for even thinking it. There is a precious little girl (or boy!) inside of me and I know I am gaining for a wonderful, wonderful reason.

But this is my blog and I can be honest: It's still hard. Maybe that is what is so wrong with our society...

But I digress.

Here is a picture taken of my belly tonight. I am in my 19th week. Almost half way. I think it's about time to buy some maternity clothes.

18 weeks and 2 days

And in the same shirt 10 weeks ago:

Slight difference.

Here is a picture taken last weekend at the MSU/UA game. Melanie and I are only a couple of weeks apart. She is having a sweet boy!
This was the first time I really looked pregnant in clothes.
I have been so blessed during this whole pregnancy and would not change a single thing. I have not been sick at all and have really been able to enjoy the whole process. God is so good!

AND, big news...we are getting close to deciding on a name. This is huge for me. I can't even decide what to eat for dinner half the time.

A picture of the coaches

Don't they both look fabulous? (no wind suits, but still fabulous)

Nana had a wardrobe change, as you can see from the picture. No ruffled white blouse, as promised. But please note her maroon shoes. Always with it, that lady.

Really, they had a great time - and they won! Nana was so funny; she said she was just too wired to sleep from all the excitement of the night. It was the best thing. She loved every minute.

Maybe these two HACs will get asked to do it again soon.

My only regret is I can not get my hands on a tape of their pre-game speech.

And get a load of this little bulldog. Henry really got into the bulldog spirit at the football game Saturday night.
LOVE this little man!
When he was told the baby was a girl, he said he would "Teach her to crawl and play the frums (drums) REAL loud!" Then, when told the baby would not be able to play at first because she will be too little, he added "I will hold her and feed her."

Sweet big cousin!

IT'S A....

Untitled from Laura Tomlinson on Vimeo.

This is how we told the family. This was taken at my parents house. Note: Henry was upstairs sleeping. Didn't seem to bother him, though.
(Please excuse the screaming in the video and my annoying voice. I hate hearing myself on camera.)

So the doctors are about 90% sure on this, so I was a little hesitant on posting. I am going back on Dec. 2nd for another viewing. Little Baby Skaggs was not cooperating during the ultrasound at all! To start with, she was on her side. We finally got her to turn over, but her legs were crossed. Then when she uncrossed her legs, she covered herself up with her hands.
Modest little thing.

We told our families Sunday. I was going to wait to spread the news until it was 100% sure, but I feel like some of the shots we have of our little babe are very conclusive.

I can't wait for all things smocked.

Trey's first words: "Boys are now the enemy"
He still has a glazed look in his eyes. Every time he sees a little girl, he smiles. This is going to be fun.

I will feel so much better on the 2nd when hopefully little miss will be cooperating and I can get a 100% YES that she is, in fact, a she!!

But in the meantime, we are going with GIRL! We are so excited!

Move over, Coach Summitt

Are you going to be in Starkville Friday night? You should. And for more reason that I will be arriving later that evening.

The reason? My mother and sassy Nana have been asked by Coach Fanning to be honorary Assistant Coaches for the MSU girls basketball team.

This is not a job being taken lightly by my Nana. I talked to her earlier today about her upcoming responsibilities. She is not so much concerned about that as much as she wanted to discuss her outfit for the night. In her words she is wearing "just something she threw together" that she has had picked out since the moment asked to accept this offer. If you are looking for her there, she will be the cute 80-something year old in "winter white pants, winter white ruffled shirt, sprinkled with maroon accessories." Those are her words, not mine.

My mother has not confirmed an outfit; I have asked. I am really hoping for a wind suit with white sneakers. I will let you know.

In the meantime, here is a rundown of their responsibilities:

• They must sit on the bench throughout the game
• During time outs, one of the HAC (honorary assistant coach, of course) must hand Coach Fanning her clipboard.
• I feel confident water bottles will be involved at some point.
• I am also hoping for mid-game team huddle involvement.
• But the best responsibility is that the HACs are responsible for giving the pre-game pep talk to the players in the locker room. Nana tells me she is just going to let my mom do the talking then when she feels inspired she will chime in.

This is great on so many levels.

Sadly, I am not going to be able to make it to their coaching debut. Stupid work. I will be arriving just as the game is ending. Perhaps I will make it to the post-game party? Mama, you hosting?

Kristen, Rob, and Henry will be there, however. And I am not promising my sister is not planning something. There may or may not be homemade signs involved.

Go State! And Go HACs!!

And now I introduce to you
The Dynamic Trio:
Coach T.
Coach Nana (the one on the left)
Coach Fanning

Hopefully we will carry tomorrow nights sure win on to Saturday with a win against Bama. I can't wait to be there. We need a little more cowbell.

Encouragement for the day

This was just emailed to me - just what I needed! Hope you are encouraged too.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Happy Hump Day!

child rearing skills

I really hope Sophie is not an example of our future child rearing skills. She is really bad.
I left Sophie alone in the house for ten minutes this afternoon. I came home to find Sophie laying on her back on the couch. This obviously means she did something wrong. Whenever she misbehaves, so rolls over on her back and gives her major puppy dog eyes, which obviously works on my every time (see picture).
I found my purse on the ground, unzipped. Trouble. I walked into my office to see an empty granola bar package. (Yes, I had food in my purse. Snack emergencies) She ate the entire thing! And not just one bar. It was a Nature Valley crunchy granola bar that comes with two bars per package. Her stomach is swollen and her breath smells of oats and honey. She is still smacking her lips. Bad dog.

On the baby front, I have had the strangest dreams lately. Is this normal? I am not even very far along in my pregnancy. Last night I had a dream that a new study came out that breast milk was really bad for babies and that all children that were nursed had a higher risk of getting tuberculosis. So random. In my dream I asked my all-knowing mother, who confirmed that yes, breast milk is really harmful for babies. The dream was so real that I woke up really confused about breast milk. Of course by the time I finished my breakfast I realized that it was, in fact, a dream. How weird is that?

Here are pictures of a pretty sunset at the beach. Trey and I went walking there the other night and I just had to take some pictures on my phone.

Obviously this was taken before Ida. On that note, can I get some praise, please? I survived my first coastal storm. Granted, it was just a tropical storm, but if you know me you know that is a huge step in the right direction. I don't do bad weather. Never have. But I surprised even myself. Sophie, on the other hand, was not a fan. She needed desperately to tee-tee during the worst of the rain and wind. We finally put on rain coats (which did no good) and took her outside. She refused to get off the porch during the first 4 attempts. Finally, Trey walked her to the middle of the yard only to have a gust of wind knock her down! She looked like a drowned rat when she was through. Not a happy camper.

Last note of the day: Please pray for my big sister, Kristen. Tomorrow and Thursday she will be taking the STEP 3 exam, which she must pass in order to get her medical license. Please pray that she will have a clarity of mind, confidence, and strength, clarity of mind, and confidence as she takes this LONG test. I can't imagine! She is the smartest and most dedicated person I know, so I know she will do great on the test and in her role as an OBGYN, but the more prayers the better! Thanks!
Go Dr. Kristen!!

Brag Book and Ida

I just woke up from an amazingly long nap. It was awesome.
With that said:

First of all, a hurricane? Really? I am in no mood. Since moving to the coast (OK, way before moving to the coast) I have been very vocal about my views towards silly things like Hurricane Parties and "riding out the storm". Just don't. How dumb. So I thought moving to hurricane land in the middle of the season was a little risky, but we seemed to have made it out in the clear. So what is this Ida thing doing out there? Isn't it a little late for a hurricane? Trey is telling me it is just going be rain for us, that the storm is heading east of us. We will see.
Well, that's enough about that. Just know I am not above driving to Starkville for the smallest hurricane. All you coasties can make fun all you want.

On to much brighter and cuter things. I have been anti bare belly pics and ultrasound pics public posting since the start of my pregnancy. I love looking at others, but am a little wary about posting my own for some reason. I just am not so sure about my bare belly for all to see or my insides.

However, I just keep looking at this picture of Baby Skaggs. It was taken at 13 weeks. I have to say, Baby Skaggs is already the little looker. Look at that profile! Isn't that the cutest little it? The little nose and lips. I love him/her.
So I put my no posting ultrasound pics rule away to post this one. I still will not do bare belly pics. Sorry.

Henry told me yesterday on the phone that I was having a boy. And that I should name it Henry. We told him we already have a Henry and we can't have two. To which he replied, "But I want two Henrys".

So there you have it. My almost-3-year-old nephew called it: it's a boy. And we will name it Henry Skaggs.

baby update / advice please!

Had my 16 week apt. today. All is perfect! Thank God for a healthy baby!
The baby's heart beat was strong; I still am taken back every time we get to hear that. It's amazing. I am still feeling great. Even my extreme tiredness is fading! I still go to bed earlier than normal, but it's so much better than pure exhaustion during the day. I even did a P90X workout yesterday as opposed to a slow walk/jog or tennis. Granted, I am having trouble walking today because of it, but the point is I had the energy to do it!

We tried to talk the dr. into doing an ultrasound to find out the sex. He said no. Isn't the customer always suppose to be right? Doesn't this apply to patient/dr. relationships too? Maybe not. We had a 12 week ultrasound and he wants to do a 20 week one, so it looks like we will be waiting a little longer before buying blue or pink. Unless I can get up to Jackson to have my sister take a peek. Hmm... We'll see!

The decision I can't seem to decide on is if I want to have the H1N1 shot or not. I can't decide. My dr. recommended that I do, but I am being a little chicken about it. I had the seasonal flu shot, but the H1N1 shot seems so new and unstudied. I am sure it has been well researched, but I am worried how it will affect my growing wee one. Thoughts?
TGIF everyone!

November 2, 2009

all my guests are gone.

insert sad face here.

But we had a great time, so I shall not focus on the fact that they have all left! My mom, dad, and Nana came on Wednesday for a short trip. Naturally we showed them fabulous fresh seafood (none of which I could partake in), and gave them a quick tour of the coast. Which could have possibly been more beneficial for me, but I acted like I was a local and talked about the building back since Katrina. I think they were impressed with my knowledge that I stole from the website.
We had so much fun, just in that short time. I wish it could have been longer. And I could kick myself for not having any pictures. My camera has been acting up (perhaps Santa wants to bring me a new one?) so I have been relying on my camera phone far too much. Anyway, no pictures of my parents and Nana's first trip to our little home on the coast. Come back, please.

Then on Friday, Laura came for a long weekend. Apparently the coast tour with the parents did not come in handy for this visit. When she got here on Friday afternoon, we decided to make what turned out to be a not-so-quick run to Target. The reason for the longevity of the trip? I got us lost. Seriously, bona fide no-idea-where-we-are, lost. I still blame it on the Iphone. I plugged in Target and it took me to Target Crime Stop. Who knew? Not me. We ended up in the ghetto in the next town over. Come to find out, Target is a very hard store to miss around here.

Apparently, just right off the interstate. You can see the red circles for miles. Well, no such luck for this newbie. We ended up safely escaping the ghetto to find a decent looking Subway, in which I made Laura go inside ask the teenage sandwich maker directions to the store.

I did take a picture of that:
And, after she insisted that she take the wheel, a picture of her examining the not so clear directions.

If you are wondering, we found it. And if you are also wondering, I bought shoes just so the trip was made worth it.

Sorry, Laura. I also got us a wee bit lost coming home from, was it the grocery store? I can't remember. I blame it on pregnancy brain. It is a real thing, readers.

Sat. we stayed home, no costumes. I really hope by next year to be invited to a Halloween party. I love being the new kid (with child) in town. But I am not bitter. We watched the State game. And what a fabulous game it was. Did anyone else watch Anthony Dixon's interview?
If that didn't make me have a Happy Halloween, I don't know what would.

She left this morning as I was preparing for work. I don't really say "getting ready", because there is little primping that I do before I go into my home office. But I do have to be mentally prepared. I think I needed a long vacation and/or heavy medication to be fully prepared for this Monday, however. But alas, it is over.

Here's to fun times with the family and Monday being over...

IT'S A....

OK. So we don't really know.

But Trey's aunt is convinced she has the answer. She has been wanting to do the "string test" on my belly since the day we told them we were pregnant. Have you ever heard of this? Not me. Until now.

We finally caught up with each other on Saturday afternoon. She claims to have never been wrong with this prediction. Even when her coworker was told she was having a boy by the ultrasound tech., the string test said girl...and guess who was right? Aunt Darlene.

So I am thinking about painting the nursery now and not having my ultrasound to determine the sex.

Just kidding. Sorry, Aunt Darlene. As much as I trust you and that string, I am getting a second opinion before I break out the paint color.

Here are some pictures Trey took on my phone. (hence the bad quality)

My face is cracking me up in the first pic. And excuse the fact that I look like I have been hit by a truck. I was tired. Thanks, Aunt Darlene - it was fun!!!
According to the string test, Baby Skaggs is a SHE!
We will find out in a couple of weeks if Aunt Darlene is right!

In the meantime, what do you think "it" is?

Here are some other wives tale symptoms I am having:
• I am breaking out. I NEVER broke out before pregnancy.
• I am tempted most nights to eat skittles for dinner. (use to be plain potatoes / weeks 8-10)
• I can't get enough milk, water or OJ
• I have not been sick at all. Not once. Praise God!

That's all I can think of. So, what's the verdict?

And I just have to share this picture. It is hilarious to me for several reasons:

1) I am holding up "41" instead of "14". We fixed that on take 2.
2) My face. Maybe I wasn't ready?
3) The quality. The hardest part of my pregnancy has been getting weekly pictures taken by Trey for my Belly Book. He is not winning any photography awards anytime soon. In his defense, this was taken on my camera phone.
4) But my FAVORITE reason for this picture is that you can finally see a bump! All the other pictures we took (when I was smiling, head not cut off and holding up the correct number) you couldn't tell I had a bump.

I am still feeling more fat than pregnant, but hopefully I will get out of that soon. I am ready for the bump to look more baby than beer.

So here is my very beautiful 14 week picture. HA!

October 25, 2009

I am pretending we won...

just like the gators are pretending they actually scored that touchdown.

I am over it now. But not without a few yells at the tv and, yes, tears. I would blame it on pregnancy, but alas, I have shed tears about sporting events on more than one occasion. Hey, it's not easy bleeding maroon.

But it seems Dan is not over it. And for good reason. I hope that florida-loving ref is reprimanded.

On a positive note, we gave those gators a run for their money and I am so proud. I wish I could have been there in person to cheer them on a see my sweet family and friends.

I will be there for the Alabama game and, of course, the Egg Bowl. Can not wait!

Starkville is not so stark

Last post of the day, I promise, and it is about Starkville/MSU yet again. I am sorry.

But I found a gem written in the Gainsville paper today. You can read more and see pictures by clicking here.

I just love my hometown and love to read about others appreciating the charm!

Starkville is not so stark

Florida fans visiting town for game will find changed area

Published: Friday, October 23, 2009 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11:12 p.m.

Tumbleweeds of trash rolling down Main Street have been replaced with neon lights and restaurants highlighted in Southern Living magazine - symbolic of this small town's development into an authentic college town.

As Florida football fans arrive for this weekend's game against Mississippi State University, they'll see a town that is quickly maturing.

A decade ago, locals joked that someone could hit a golf ball down Main Street after 5 p.m. and not hit a car. Home to Mississippi State, the town of about 26,000 residents wasn't what many expected from a university community.

The town had four bars for college students and a strained town-gown relationship.

Starkville was suffering from a problem of perception versus reality, voted in some surveys in the 1990s as the worst college town in the Southeastern Conference.

Visitors now, though, might wonder what happened to that town. It's the same place, but much has changed in culture and attitude.

In a decade or so, the community has developed into one of the more progressive communities in Mississippi, leading community initiatives such as free curbside recycling and being the first city in the state to ban public smoking.

About five years ago, a group called Starkville in Motion was created to advocate for more sidewalks and bike paths in the city, leading to the city's first bike paths.

A few months ago, the city requested permission from the state to sell alcohol on Sundays, something considered symbolic of the changing of the guard for the city in northeastern Mississippi.

Even Starkville's mayor appears to represent youth and vigor for the community. Until Parker Wiseman, a Starkville native, was elected this year, the list of previous mayors looked like an AARP convention.

Wiseman, 29, an attorney with a master's degree in public administration, blends campus and city interests together. He served as student government president from 2002-03.

"The fact that younger, more progressive citizens in this community have taken an active role makes it possible for somebody like me to get elected," Wiseman said. "The culture of our city has evolved quite a bit over the last decade."

Some might say culture and nightlife, particularly downtown, have turned from desolation to a destination.

Chef Ty Thames operates two restaurants downtown - Restaurant Tyler and Barrister's Bar and Grill - and says a marked difference has taken place in the five years he has lived in the city after spending time in Italy and Washington, D.C.

He serves dishes specializing in Mississippi flavor, such as Vardaman sweet potato gnocchi.

"I came back to Mississippi to showcase my talents with foods I grew up with," said Thames, whose restaurants were featured in Southern Living magazine. "Starkville has turned into a good place to do it."

Another sign of life in the city has been the emergence of community festivals.

This past weekend, the community celebrated the third-annual Johnny Cash Flower Pickin' Festival, recognizing the city's quirky history with the Man in Black.

Cash was arrested in Starkville in 1965 for public drunkenness. He wrote a song called "Starkville City Jail," claiming he was arrested for picking flowers.

To help accommodate the increased number of events now landing in Starkville, the city recently opened a new Hilton Garden Inn along the Highway 82 bypass, a corridor of anticipated growth around the city.

The addition of more than 100 hotel rooms will help address one of the more frequent concerns voiced in the past by visitors - a lack of accommodations.

Between Main Street and MSU's campus, the Cotton District is another unique piece of Starkville's personality.

A sub-community of new urbanism within the city, the Cotton District has a feel similar to New Orleans' French Quarter and parts of Europe.

Narrow streets and dense living with the occasional statue mounted on buildings, the Cotton District hosts such annual events as the Cotton District Arts Festival and Bulldog Bash - one of the largest outdoor arts events in the state and one of the largest free outdoor annual concerts, respectively.

"Starkville is probably the most unpublicized for what's going on of any community in Mississippi," said Dan Camp, developer of the Cotton District who served as mayor before Wiseman was elected. "People want to move to Starkville."

hoping for an upset

Last time the Gators won in Starkville, MS? 1985.
Here's hoping that streak won't end tomorrow.

Some are predicting it won't.

Oh glorious thought. Fingers crossed...

Go Dawgs!

HAPPY FRIDAY!

cousins

This past weekend I got to go to see my little buddy, Henry! We had so much fun playing. He is ALL boy. I love it! We played outside for hours. For each different activity, he needed a different kind of boot on. Playing football, swinging, riding bikes, helping plant flowers with his daddy - all these things required all different types of shoes. But boots each time! He loves boots!

He and I took a break on Saturday for a little lunch. As soon as I sat down by him he asked me where my camera was. Poor child is used to his photo-loving aunts by now.

So here are a few shots I took from my phone of him eating. He asked for them and said "cheeeeeese" the whole time - how could I refuse?
Looks like he is up to something in this picture!

I love that smirk!

He is just hysterical. He told me what he wanted for lunch. That is shredded cheese on his plate, by the way. He said he wanted cheese, so when I handed him slice cheese, he said that he wanted his "daddy's big boy cheese". I had to pull out all the cheese before I finally figured out which one he was talking about!

We told him a few weeks ago that there was a baby in my belly. He thought that was so crazy. So we were talking about it at lunch and I was trying to explain that he will be the big cousin.

Here is how the conversation went:

"I the big cousin because I am big? And I run?" - Henry

"Yeah! And you will have to help with the little baby" - Heather

"And the baby will crawl?" - Henry

"One day! Will you help out with the baby?" - Heather

" I will save her." - Henry

I love it! He is really into "saving" people. He loves firemen and always talks about the firemen saving everyone. So I asked him what he will save her from and he said that "if the baby falls down I will save her"
(not sure why "it" is a "her". Brainwashed by his mama, maybe?)

That is precious! He is already protective. Such a sweet big cousin.

We had the best time, but we missed you, yaya!!

Speaking of yaya, I am having company come see me next week! YIPPEE! My mom, dad and sassy Nana are coming down on Wednesday and then yaya is staying with me over the weekend. I can't wait. Hurry up next week and get here!

Happy Hump-Day!

Idiots guide to pregnancy

So I have recently taken up tennis. And by taken up, I mean playing in the afternoons with Trey. No league, no teams. But it's a lot of fun. And I am pleasantly surprised at how well I play. Seriously. You should come watch me.

My Nana is concerned about my new activity, however. She finds it a bit dangerous to be playing this sport while growing a babe.

I asked my Dr: All is well on the tennis front.

But I decided to take matters into my own hands and research the best exercises while with child.

This is my favorite bit of advice I have found so far:

"If your water breaks during any form of exercise, do not continue with the activity. Stop the exercise immediately and seek medical attention."

Did someone really have to be warned about this? Hilarious. I am no expert here, but I am convinced if my water broke while, say, playing tennis, I would not want to complete the set.

Saturday morning confidence boost.

So I was in the grocery store this morning minding my own business when it happened.

The "nice" lady, full of opinions and advice, was standing in line behind me at the checkout. The conversation started out simple enough. She asked me if I thought the strawberries I was buying were going to be good, for she was thinking about going to get some. First thought: would I buy them if I thought they were going to be bad? But, I simply smiled and said "I hope so".

It's time now to tell you that the said lady was holding an itty-bitty baby girl. This is when the conversation took a turn for the worse. I will put it in dialogue form for easier reading:

Sweet Heather (SH, from now on): "She is beautiful! How old is she?"

Lady with the baby (LB, from now on): She told me her age, which I forgot. Few weeks old. Could have fooled me - the babe looked like she came straight to the store after leaving the birthing place.

Then she added...
"Thanks. You have chilren?" (no "d")

SH: "No I don't." I should have stopped there, but felt compelled for some strange reason to add: "But I am expecting my first"

LB: "Really? I wouldn't have guessed!" (score one for Heather)

SH: "well, I am still early" (thinking the conversation has now ended)

LB: (SHE should have stopped there, but continued to look me up and down, awkwardly examining my entire body then added....) "OH!!! I See it now. uh-huh, girl. I see it. It's a boy. Your hips and thighs are really showing. You are putting it all on at your hips and thighs. It's a boy fo' sho'"

REALLY??!! My hips and thighs? Tell me my stomach is bigger - I know this. That is where the baby is living. My thighs? My hips? Nice, lady. She might as well have called me a fatty.

trading gigs and a baby update

Working from home has been a learning experience, but a great one. I have very few interruptions now that I am out of the office on most days. I am really able to get things done without having to deal with the everyday distractions of being in an office with other people.
However, I have left a pretty cool working environment to work, well, with a maltepoo.

My Hattiesburg office:
Part of the lobby (loft on the top left)
One of the living room areas.
Another shot of the lobby. That is a live plant wall!
My office is the one right when you go up those stairs.

My Gulfport office/Co-workers:
Dreaming sweet dreams. I love that she smiles in her sleep.
This is how she feel asleep. For real. Her head is hanging off the couch.
(and her PJs are coming off. But I think the first problem is that she is wearing PJs)

The house is coming together slowly. We plan on doing a little shopping and decorating this weekend. Yippee!

In other news, all is well on the baby front. I met my new doctor yesterday. He seems really nice and very helpful. I am thankful for that, as I do not have a whole lot of time to shop around.

We were able to have another ultrasound. The baby has grown from a peanut-like shape to a real baby! He/she was very active, had his/her legs crossed and arm waving by his/her head. Adorable. Very photogenic little inch and a half baby. The doctor said all looked perfect and the little munchkin is growing has he/she should. What a great thing to hear! The heartbeat was strong - heart rate of 168.

I still have not been sick at all, but my cravings have changed slightly. I was on a plain baked potato kick for a couple of weeks. That has long left me. Now I want lemon-berry slushes from Sonic, gummy bears, skittles....basically empty fruit-flavored calories. I am trying to stick to real fruit, though. The babe would appreciate that, I am sure.

The fam (minus Trey, who is sure the little one is a manly man) is convinced we are having a little princess. I tend to agree. They are so convinced that my eldest sis, Kristen, called yesterday after purchasing several adorable pink and white dresses and gowns. She, of course, told the lady at the shop that she does not know if I am having a boy or a girl, but has an aunt-feeling that it's a mini-Heather (oh joy of the world!) Laura simply refers to the little babe as her niece.

Trey was very positive that he noticed the little person's 'man-hood' on yesterday's ultrasound picture.
Two things, hun:
1) It's a 12 week picture, you can't tell that just yet.
and, possibly more importantly...
2)That would be the umbilical cord you are pointing to.

We are both really excited, obviously, and neither of us really care one way or the other. It's just fun for me to think of dressing a wee one in monogram bloomers and bows and for Trey to think of taking the little dude to do...I don't know...whatever boys do. Hunt? Football? Tee-tee outside?

We will find out soon!!

TGIF!

I will be attending a wedding.
Also, check out this! October is breast cancer awareness month, so let's all THINK PINK and find a cure for this disease.

Happy almost Friday!

observations.

My last post generated some in-state rivalry. It's all fun and games. No harsh feelings, rebs.
But before I leave the football topic all together, I have to first comment on the State game last weekend. Inches away from beating LSU. People were expecting us to get slaughtered. It was a great game - Win or lose, I am so proud of my dogs.

I am now changing the subject.

Some things I have noticed since I have been pregnant (or at least known I was pregnant):

1) My skin is breaking out. I have never been one to break out so this is bothering me in the most intense way. luckily, my face has remained relatively clear of the break outs. Small price to pay for a baby, I know, so I am not complaining. Just stating the facts.

2) My body has already started changing. Is this normal for 10 1/2 weeks? I googled it. Which, I should have learned my lesson by now about googling. I googled my symptoms before I knew I was pregnant and was convinced it was diabetes. No. It was a baby. But I must google. So I did. And it said that some people don't show until month 5. Tell me this is false. I can't wait for the belly to look pregnant, though. Right now I just look bloated. Again, no complaints, just stating.

3) My appetite is outrageous. Which may explain observation #2 more than anything. I eat several snacks a day. In fact, I think I need popcorn right now.

4) I now know where Pet Smart, a smoothie shop, TJ Maxx, and Sonic are all located in Gulfport. I think that is a great first week. This week: grocery store. Wish me luck.

OVERRATED!

In the words of the ESPN announcers:
"One of the top teams in the country? They are not one of the top teams in the conference!"

GO GAMECOCKS!

first Gulfport visit

Kristen, Rob and Henry helped us move in last Saturday. I don't know what we would have done without them! Between them and Trey's parents, we were moved in and pretty much settled in no time. Henry and I did the heavy lifting. You know, pillows, blankets, things of that nature.

Sunday morning before they left, Kristen and I took Henry to see the beach. He loved it! And the beach was actually nicer than I was expecting.
He is just precious.

Working from home is going great. I am actually really productive. Sophie is very annoyed, however, that I never leave. Apparently I am interrupting quality nap time.

In other news, I discovered a gem of a store today. Right down the road there is this coffee and ice cream shop. I ordered the most amazing smoothie I have ever tasted. Strawberry/blueberry. I never want it to end.
Gulfport success story #1: Smoothie shop found.

Gulfport Surprise!

Well, we are officially residents of Gulfport!

My sweet mother-in-law made this adorable sign (along with colorful balloons!) and had it waiting on the front door of our home as we drove up.

Notice anything????

BABY SKAGGS!!

We had the shock of a lifetime last weekend! We found out a week before our move to Gulfport that I am pregnant.  We are so excited!

I swear I was on my way to being the next candidate for TLC's Pregnant and Didn't Know It.  I had NO CLUE! Any symptoms (which weren't a lot and very mild)  that I  had I blamed on stress.  It wasn't until my doctor sister suggested I take a pregnancy test when I called her complaining that I just wasn't 100% and so tired!  We were shocked, but thrilled!!!  We heard a heartbeat on Sept. 12.  It was amazing.

I am documenting my progress, as requested.  Right now it just looks like I had more than my share of dinner.  I am not promising bare belly shots.  Ever.

8 Weeks (at our home in Hattiesburg)
9 weeks (on the beach at our new home! )

We can't wait to welcome Baby Skaggs into our family in April!
