October 11, 2010

well, I was wrong.

I only make a mistake once a year or so (no need for a comment, Trey), and this time I made a big one.

It wasn't hunger that was keeping my babe awake.

The first night eating the cereal worked beautifully. Slept from 7 - 4, ate, and then slept until 7. The next night, not as great. Then last night. Oh last night. We were up every hour! He never ran fever, wasn't obviously teething, wasn't hungry, he just wanted to be held and cuddled. I knew something was up.

So as soon as the doctor's office was open this morning, I called to make an apt. We went in at 9 and they confirmed it: an ear infection in both ears. I die. He still wasn't running a fever and was happy and smiling the whole time we were there. I thought for sure they would tell me to give him food and let him cry it out. Was not expecting to hear ear infections. I feel horrible about the whole thing. Bless his heart.

She did suggest starting him on cereal 2 times a day for 2 weeks and then moving on to vegetables. He did weigh 20 pounds today, after all. She told me I was going to wear myself out. Yes. I confirm.

So today we cuddled a lot, read lots of books and took small naps on mommy's chest, since I was told that it feels worse when he is laying flat in his bed. I think that made both of us feel better.

We start medicine tonight. Hope it works...and fast.

We did have one fun thing happen today: my cousin came to visit! She teaches in Collinsville and is on fall break. She came to the coast to visit a friend and dropped in to get some lovin' from Jones.

I took this opportunity with Adelia to introduce Jones to Baby. Don't know Baby? Let's just say she has been with me since my birth (including, but not limited to: surgeries, college, vacations, night before my wedding and my child's birth). Trey won't let me sleep with her anymore (would that be creepy?) but she lives in my bedside table and comes out when Trey is out of town.

I figured if anything could make Jones feel better, it was Baby.

Baby, meet Jones. Jones, meet Baby.

Thanks for coming, Adelia. You made the day brighter!

Girl, I know that this is easier said and done, especially since Jones is baby #1, but I totally overlooked the ear infection signs when our oldest was a baby. Of course, in my defense, she didn't exhibit ANY ear infection signs--no fever, no tugging at her ears, no 'usual' things. I felt HORRIBLE when the doc confirmed it. I told myself I was the worst mother for not noticing. Hope your little man feels better soon (and you, too!). He is precious!!!! From seeing his sweet, happy face in other posts, not to mention his chunky little legs (I LOVE a chunky baby), you are doing a fantastic job!!!

I am with you about Reese's infection - Jones never ran fever or tugged at ear. It was only the sleep thing. I was clueless and feel horrible!

And Laura, you mess with Baby, you mess with me.

Don't feel horrible! Avi never showed signs either. The only thing that ever tipped me off was when she would refuse a bottle after just a little while of sucking or cry when i would lay herbdown...and I live with a doctor! It;s easy to miss. You are a great mom!

Don't feel bad; Jackson NEVER shows signs of ear infections other than a cough. It gets me every time. One time we took him to the doctor a week before he was scheduled to have his 1st set of tubes put in (he's had 3 sets total), his ear drum was literally about to burst it was so infected, and we had no clue.

Keep up the good work. It's obvious Jones is thriving!

Poor Jones. Watch out for an upset tummy with the antibiotics.....might be time to mash up a banana.

Mashed up banana = homemade baby food!
